We can say with certainty that we would be hard-pressed to find anyone who hasn't heard of the sitcom Friends. The American TV sitcom ran for ten years over ten seasons. The smash TV hit was so successful that the Friends' cast net worth reaches extreme highs to this day. The fans of the show were more than happy to learn the cast would get together again after David Schwimmer was the first to agree to a Friends reunion. We were lucky enough to see the main cast reunited in 2021 before Matthew Perry sadly passed away at the age of 54.

The series follows a group of six friends in their twenties, as they struggle through life, and deal with everyday events that are often exaggerated for comedic purposes. Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe live in New York City and are often seen hanging out at Central Perk café, and in Monica's apartment, where most of the shenanigans take place.

Friends had many memorable cameos by huge Hollywood stars over the ten years. While some were met with a warm welcome, others were not viewed as favorably. It turns out that the cast didn't have much time to form an opinion when two iconic actors randomly walked on set in the most unpredictable cameo ever.

Robin Williams And Billy Crystal Had An Inexplicable Cameo On Friends

One random cameo happened during the third season on episode 24 called "The One With The Ultimate Fighting Champion." Although the main focus of the episode is Monica's attempts to support her boyfriend's career as a fighting champion, we suddenly get to see Robin Williams and Billy Crystal have their two-minute-long glory.

When Monica enters the café to tell their friends a story about her current boyfriend Pete, she's unexpectedly interrupted by Tomas (Williams) crying, and complaining to his friend (Crystal). They squeeze themselves onto the main cast's couch as Tomas starts wailing in a thick fake accent about his wife's marital affair.

Monica tries repeatedly to finish her story, but Tomas' frantic way of speaking and gesticulating is way more interesting to the group. As the actor pours his heart out to his friend, he later finds out that the said friend is the one going behind his back. As the two actors make a scene and storm out of the café, they leave the entire cast speechless.

While the cameo was random, it's no surprise that the two comedians showed up together; Williams' and Crystal's friendship goes all the way back. The Father's Day stars were always known for their tight friendship off-screen.

Though they met in the late seventies on the stand-up comedy circuit, Williams and Crystal's friendship was solidified thanks to Comic Relief. After Williams' sudden death, his dear friend Crystal made sure to call him an "explosively funny genius".

Billy Crystal And Robin Williams Completely Improvised Their Scene

Robin Williams was always called The Master of Improv, and rightfully so. Many of his unscripted moments were eventually left in his movies. As for his co-star, he was no stranger to this form of acting. Billy Crystal's iconic Princess Bride performance was all improv as well.

Therefore, it's no surprise the duo had no problem with improvising their entire appearance on the episode of Friends. The show's cast was well acquainted with such tactics, as many of their improvised scenes worked and were kept in.

Despite that, the pair's off-scripted conversation must have come as a shock to the present actors. The reactions from the main six actors of Friends were completely organic, from Joey's epic line to Monica closing out the scene and forgetting what she had to say.

Experimenting off-script brings out the needed authenticity and humor for sitcoms like these. Williams and Crystal certainly knew what the show needed, and they were able to bring out their best for the two-minute time period they had.

Fans Were Right To Assume The Cameo Was Totally Random

Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, and Bruce Willis were only a few of the big names that appeared on Friends' cameo list. But, the big difference is that Robin and Billy's cameos were completely unplanned. Williams and Crystal happened to wander onto the set of Friends and were asked to do a scene on the spot. The majority of actors wouldn't agree to such a request, but the co-stars took the opportunity and made it their own.

Although Williams was already very well-known in the acting world, it assisted the pair with the promotions of their then-upcoming hit movie Father's Day (1997). The film follows a woman who contacts her two old boyfriends in order to track down her teenage son.

While Winona Ryder took heat for her controversial cameo on Friends, Williams' and Crystal's random appearance on the show remains one of the most pleasant cameos in sitcom history.
