Tamlyn Naomi Tomita was born on January 27, 1966. The boy of Japanese descent was born to parents Shiro and Asako. Her father was a sergeant in the Los Angeles Police Department. During her time with the department, she served with the first Asian task force.
For her education, Tamlyn attended Granada Hills High School in the San Fernando Valley, in the same city. After completing her high school, she enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a minor in history.
Growing up, Tomita was a beautiful young woman who had interests in show business. So, in 1984, she was able to win the title of Queen at the Nisei Week Pageant in Los Angeles. Unlike The Karate Kid, this film was a commercial disaster, but her performance was nonetheless critically acclaimed.
She was next in the movie ‘The Joy Luck Club’ (1993), and the director was Wayne Wang. The movie managed to earn around three times its budget and took Tomita to the heights. The film was about the relationships between Chinese-American women and their mothers.
